Civil Rights.  The San Antonio Branch NAACP is sponsoring the 73rd Freedom Fund Dinner on Friday, October 27, 2023, at the University of the Incarnate Word’s McCombs Center Rosenberg Skyroom, 847 East Hildebrand, at 7:00 p.m.  The keynote speaker is Mr. Leon Russell, Chairman for the National NAACP Board of Directors.  Ads and tickets are available.  The ad deadline is Friday, September 8th.  For more information, call the Branch office at 210-224-7636 and leave a message for Mrs. Vivian Jones or Mrs. Mentoria Sherfield.


Economic Development.  San Antonio Black International Film Festival Celebrates 5 Year Anniversary.

2023 Theme:  October 5-8.  HBCU Films celebrating film and television creativity that highlights Historically Black Colleges and Universities.  Hybrid presentation.  For information and tickets contact www.SABIFF.TV.  Well known actresses Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad will be presented October 5th at the Carver Community Cultural Center, 225 N. Hackberry Street..


Education.  Friends of the Carver Library present Author – Mr. Caleb Alexander at The Black History Breakfast, Saturday, September 16, at 10:30 a.m., 3350 East Commerce Street.  RSVP to Eventbrite:  Black History Breakfast@The Carver Library.


Education.  50 Year Anniversary Celebration of the Carver Public Library at its current location, Saturday, October 28th 12 to 4 pm., 3350 E. Commerce St.


Education.  “Homework at Second” H.A.S.  Tutoring program sponsored by Second Baptist Church, 3310 E. Commerce Street.  Monday-Thursday 4:00 to 5:30 pm.  Assistance for students of all grades. For more information contact Rev. Keith Jackson, 210-227-2605.


Education.  2023 Youth Essay (High School and College).  Topic:  “My Hope.  My Vote.  My Future.” Student may submit an essay, poetry, rap, or art.  Scholarships for the top three submissions (1st-$500, 2nd-$250, 3rd -$100.  Entry deadline for submission to is October 31st.  For additional details visit (League of Women Voters of San Antonio).


Political Action.  Volunteer Deputy Registrar (VDR) Certification Training.  The Bexar County Elections Department offers 3 options to become a Deputy Registrar:  1) Virtual Training via Zoom meeting, 2) On-Line Training, and 3) In-Person Training.  For more information, email, or call (210) 335-8683.  The voter registration deadline for the November 7, 2023, election is Tuesday, October 10, 2023.

Safety:  Community Shredding Events:  Saturday, October 7th, 10 am to Noon at the Claude Black Center, 2805 E. Commerce St.; and Saturday, October 21st, 10 am to Noon at the District 2 Northeast Field Office, 4351 Rittiman Road

Transportation:  VIA Transportation will provide FREE RIDES TO THE POLLS for all city, county, state and federal elections for anyone who needs transportation on Election Day and displays the voter registration card.
